Collective Priorities

The following priorities and underlying strategies emerged directly from several months of research and data collection which included: 915 survey responses, 17 interviews, 8 workgroup sessions, 8 council presentations, 10 steering committee meetings, 8 benchmark communities, a countywide economic impact analysis, and countless community conversations. These priorities and strategies are not specific to any one sector or stakeholder group - they represent the collective.

Spaces: Develop, support, and protect high-quality facilities and venues for the creation, cultivation, and exhibition of Arts and Culture countywide.

Data:  Develop systems and tools that use data to drive decision-making and track the future of arts and culture in Summit County.

Places: Support the development and connection of places for arts and culture across Summit County geographies.

Funding:  Develop diverse and sustainable funding mechanisms to ensure long-term success and vibrancy for Arts and Culture in Summit County.  

Governance/Policy: Create administrative structures, systems, and policies to support the sustained vitality and growth of arts and culture in Summit County.

People/Organizations: Support the needs of people and organizations through arts and culture in Summit County

Programming: Build creative programs that respond to our diverse community needs, interests, and dreams

ProjectABC Summit

The ProjectABC Summit was a five hour gathering held November 14, 2017 at the Blair Education Center (Park City Hospital). During the ProjectABC Summit more than 80 community members came together to learn, share, celebrate, and plan for the future of Arts and Culture in Summit County.

State of the Arts

During the ProjectABC Summit, Hadley Dynak, Executive Director of the Park City Summit County Arts Council, delivered a State of the Arts talk which laid out the personal, community, and economic impact of Arts and Culture in Summit County.

Spaces

How might we develop, support, and protect high-quality facilities and venues for the creation, cultivation, and exhibition of Arts and Culture countywide.

Strategy: Build or set-aside affordable live/work housing for artists who live and work in Summit County.

Strategy: Identify ways to protect current and future Arts and Culture spaces in perpetuity to avoid the loss of create spaces over time.

Strategy: Create accessible, community-level, locals-focused venues for the performance and exhibition of arts and culture.

Strategy: Develop a locals-only co-op retails space that sells art, products, and wares from local artists and makers from throughout the county

Strategy: Create opportunities for local artists to display work in public buildings, businesses, hotels, and resort lodges.

Strategy: Build additional indoor and outdoor venues for large, world-class performances.

Strategy: Establish Community Arts and Culture facilities throughout Summit County that includes work, performance, exhibition, and education spaces.

Strategy: Increase overall quantity of publicly supported Arts and Culture facilities. Similar to what we’ve done for recreation facilities.

Strategy: Develop a commercial kitchen and food incubator space

Strategy: Develop collaborative studio facilities for artists working in a variety of fields that provide workspace, storage, and equipment.

Strategy: Expand existing or develop new public gathering spaces countywide that provide opportunities to display and perform.

Strategy: Ensure facilities are available or accessible for small and emerging nonprofits and events, not just the anchors.


Governance/

Policy

How might we create administrative structures, systems, and policies to support the sustained vitality and growth of arts and culture in Summit County.  

Strategy: Establish a new or identify one or more existing local organizations to:

  • Manage and administer centralized funding distribution (i.e., grants)

  • Advocate on behalf creatives and arts and culture organizations locally and statewide

  • Promote arts and culture countywide to locals and destination visitors.

  • Support and connect places for arts and culture throughout the county in a unified effort

Strategy: Create a dedicated, official arts and culture liaison position or department in local government (e.g., Summit County, Park City, etc.)

Strategy: Enact local policy to protect existing and future arts and culture assets (facilities and public art).

Strategy: Establish or identify an organization or individual to serve as a liaison/coordinator to advocate for inclusion, programming, and outreach to diverse populations throughout Summit County.

Strategy: Enact local policy to establish and ensure long-term affordable housing and workspaces for artists.

Strategy: Establish a Private % for Art policy similar to existing Public % for Art policies.

Strategy: Research existing local Arts and Culture funding policies and consider renegotiation of or amendments to those policies to be ensure alignment with community need.

Strategy: Form a countywide Citizen Advisory Group for arts and culture generally to hold the local government and other key stakeholders accountable and to advocate for arts and culture.

Strategy: Establish policy that connects arts and culture to city and county government economic and community development goals.
